It is impossible to achieve a good harvest without fertilization. Mother nature thought that the reserves of nutrients in the soil are replenished with organic matter. But, non-compliance with the rules for applying organic dressings is fraught with negative consequences. And, before you buy organic fertilizers for a vegetable garden or a garden, read what types of organics exist and about the features of use.
Types and characteristics of organic fertilizers
Organic fertilizers are created from plant parts or animal waste products. Whereas mineral fertilizers consist of one (or several) nutrients in high concentration, organic fertilizers have a more complex composition. The only drawback is that the amount of active substances is much less, hence the material consumption is greater. Consider the types of organics:
- Manure is a common and affordable nitrogen organic fertilizer. In addition to improving the structure and quality of the soil, it increases air permeability and retains moisture. Valid for about 4 years. But more does not mean better, especially when it comes to the use of manure: no more than once every 4 years, approximately 30-40 tons per hectare of land. It is best to apply in the fall, and only rotted manure, just before digging the earth, to avoid "volatilization" of nitrogen;
- Compost is a great plant-based alternative to manure. The application dosage does not differ from the norms for the previous fertilizer. Contains nitrogen, phosphorus, calcium and many trace elements. Never use this product unripened because it contains pathogens and active weed seeds. Please note that compost is a favorable place for the development of a bear. Therefore, if you decide to buy compost from someone else's site, make sure that it is not infected with this insect;
- Ash - saturated with phosphorus, potassium, calcium, magnesium, molybdenum, manganese and other useful elements. But it does not contain nitrogen at all, therefore it is preferable to use it in combination with nitrogen-containing agents, but only alternately;
- Sawdust is an affordable and popular type of organic matter, which, in addition to fertilizer, acts as a mulch. But they also need to be extremely careful. You can not make fresh sawdust, they will "steal" all the nitrogen and moisture from the plants. If there is no other option, then mix them with urea (1 cup for 3 buckets of sawdust). If the soil is acidic, it is necessary to preliminarily carry out liming before using sawdust;
- Peat - loosens the soil and accumulates moisture in it. But the nutrient content is not high, so it is not so popular among gardeners. But, you can improve the quality indicators in combination with nutritional supplements. Before using peat, be sure to dry it, because in its fresh form it contains substances harmful to plants. In addition, in order not to “steal” moisture in plants, the moisture content of the material should be no less than 60%.
- Chicken manure is an organic fertilizer, which in content resembles complex mineral preparations. The composition includes potassium, magnesium, nitrogen and phosphorus, and also has the ability to disinfect the soil, while suppressing pathogens. Due to the content of urea, it is not recommended to use fresh. Better yet, add peat in (1:2 ratio) before use. Can be applied as a liquid mineral fertilizer by making a tincture of manure and water. After 10 days of "ripening", add to the wells and bury. Chicken manure is an excellent organic fertilizer for cucumbers , white cabbage, tomatoes, flowers, potatoes and other plants.
- Green manure - crops of plants, which in a certain period cut and lay out the ground parts on the surface of the site. Such actions, in addition to fertilizing with nutrients, will also perform the function of improving soil structure, reducing the number of weeds, and protecting against blowing and erosion. It is better to cut green manure before or during the budding period, since green manure contains more nitrogen, and older ones contain very coarse organic matter.
